Glen Elgin Distillery
Founded at the end of the whisky boom in 1898, Glen Elgin in Speyside was designed by the distillery architect Charles Doig of Elgin. It was sold to private buyers in 1901 and named Glen Elgin-Glenlivet Distillery Co Ltd. It closed again 5 months later in 1902 and 1907 Glasgow whisky merchant John J. Blanche bought the distillery. In 1930 it became part of Scottish Malt Distillers and an important blend in popular White Horse Whisky.
In 1950 the distillery became powered by electricity rather than traditional water and distillery production increased.
Glen Elgin has been a major contributor to blends.
Notes from Glen Elgin
Adelphi Independent Bottlers
The distillery was built in 1826 by Charles and David Gray on the banks of the River Clyde, Glasgow. In the 1840’s whisky was made and in 1860 a law was passed allowing Scotch whisky to be matured tax-free and sold. In 1880 Walker and Co. bought over Adelphi injecting capital to expand the distillery and make grain whisky as well as malt whisky.
In 1903 Adelphi was bought again by the Distillers Co. Sadly in 1906 one of the wash-backs in the distillery collapsed causing fatalities and malt distilling ceased on the site. However in 1907 grain distilling and cask maturation still continued even though pot stills ceased production of malt whisky. Over the years the bonded warehouse closed in 1968 and Adelphi distillery closed in 1971.
In 1993 Jamie Walker great grand-son of Archibald Walker revived the Adelphi name as an independent bottler to explore malt whisky and make a limited number of rare, well aged and top quality malt whisky.
In 2007-2012 there was the idea of building a new distillery and plans were granted. By 2014 the first spirit was produced at Ardnamurchan distillery and in 2016 the first bottling released and sold out. A second bottling in 2017 was also sold out and a third bottling in Ardnamurchan 2018 was released.
