Tasting Notes–Arran-Drumadoon Point The Explorer Series Volume 4 49.5%

Nose:

A burst of sweet apple with an underlying maltiness – a classic expression of well-aged Arran. The sweet notes linger and are enriched by baked pastry and a dusting of icing sugar (think Apple Strudel). Rich and nutty in the background, bringing to life the influence of the casks used.

Palate:

An initial wave of sweetness followed by spice; Spiced apple, cocoa powder and star anise. Flavours of dark chocolate and raisins also start to develop, creating a beautiful balance between Arran’s signature style and sherry cask maturation.

Finish:

A long and warming finish, reflecting the sweetness and spice found on nose and palate. A dram that will leave you wanting to pour another!

Notes from Arran Distillery

Arran Distillery

The distillery was opened in 1995, at Lochranza, in the north of the Island. It is the perfect location for producing the perfect Malt. The area is home to the purest water in all of Scotland, water that’s been cleansed by granite and softened by peat as it slowly meanders from the mountaintops into nearby Loch na Davie.

Only the traditional methods of distilling are used, with wooden wash-backs and copper stills, designed to an exact specification.

Peat is not used in the production process or caramel for artificial colouring unlike many other distilleries.

All Single Malts are non-chill-filtered, which means they are natural in pigment and exactly the way whisky should be.

Kildonan village is situated on the southern coast of the Isle of Arran, not far from our own new Lagg Distillery. The small pear-shaped island of Pladda is just 1km from the coastline. The privately-owned island is home to Pladda lighthouse which was designed by Thomas Smith and is still active today. Established in 1790, the lighthouse has a commanding position at the southern end of the island. The stunning view of Pladda can be seen clearly from Kildonan which is home to Silver Sands, one of the most beautiful beaches on Arran. Kildonan also boasts a castle which along with Lochranza Castle and Brodick Castle were important fortresses guarding Arran’s strategically important position in the approaches to the Firth of Clyde.

Their proudest moment was winning the ASVA award for Best Visitor Attraction in 2018 (Association of Scottish Visitor Centres) a huge accolade for our team. They all value our place within their award-winning team and guarantee a wonderful, personal welcome.

As well as tours, their CASKS Cafe is an excellent place to relax and enjoy a well-earned coffee, or indeed something stronger. They support Visit Scotland’s ‘Taste our Best’ initiative, showcasing the very best of local island produce and encourage you to visit.
