Tasting Notes-Auld Goonsy’s-Caol Ila 12 Year Old
This Islay malt is like breathing in a peat fire.
BBQ pulled pork, and it is peppery, with a comforting creamy aftertaste.
Notes by Goonsy’s Tasting Panel from experts in the whisky industry.
Is a real old timer in the whisky industry and has a wealth of knowledge and experience having worked in the cooperage of bonded warehouses and also in distilleries throughout Scotland. A bit of a joker with tales of the industry and stories that would make you laugh. With old friends, ex-distillery managers and whisky enthusiasts are able to reminisce about their past in the industry. Auld Goonsy is also known for some poems after a few drams.
This is a team able to choose casks from just about any distillery in Scotland with their knowledge and experience. A panel of ‘auld yins’ select a cask and then have it bottled. Some casks will be bottled at Cask Strength and others will be bottled at a strength that the panel feel is just right for a dram. With their expertise will be able to bring various flavours to a whisky bringing uniqueness to their single cask offerings,
Information from Auld Goonsy’s
Caol Ila Distillery
Pronounced ‘Cull-Eela’ in gaelic, the distillery was established in 1846 by Glasgow distillery owner Hector Henderson. Located 1 mile from Port Askaig, North East of the Isle of Islay in a beautiful setting with amazing views of the Sound of Islay looking over to the Paps of Jura.
By 1863 traders Bulloch Lade & Co took over the distillery and business was good selling blended whisky. The distillery changed hands 3 times over 20 Years and by 1879 had its own pier and and steamships took the whisky to the mainland.
In 1920 Bulloch Lade & Co went into liquidation and sold to JP O’Brien Ltd who then sold it to Caol Ila Distillery.Co.Ltd and re-opened it in 1934 but in 1941 because of restrictions on barley and people power the distillery had to close once again.
Eventually re-opening again, by 1972 the distillery had increased production, it also expanded and by 1974 demand for blended whisky also increased.
Today the distillery with friendly staff and tourists visiting from all over the world makes it a wonderful place to visit and being able to buy from their selection of single malt whiskies makes it an enjoyable experience.
