Notes from Douglas Laing
The distillery in Elgin was built on the site of an old chapel and was founded by John Duff and two associates, Charles Shirres and George Thomson in 1894, together with its neighbour Benriach.
Because of the great recession in the 19th century and crippled with debt John Duff had to sell everything to pay his creditors. The distillery was bought by John Grant-Hill Thomson & Co.
Later in the early 1970’s, Longmorn merged with the distillery “The Glenlivet” to create “The Glenlivet Distillers Ltd” and doubled its production capacity in both 1972 and 1977.
The Glenlivet Group”, part of Seagram was bought by the French group Pernod-Ricard on 19 december 2001.
Longmorn is part of the “Heritage Collection” and one of the few distilleries to never stop producing.
Douglas Laing & Co
Was established in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing known to many in the trade as FDL. It has been a family owned business for over 65 years.
They believe not adding any colouring or chill filtering their spirits and allow the naturally present oils, fats and enzymes in the whisky to make their own special contribution to its nose, mouthfeel, palate and finish.
