Tasting Notes-Bunnahabhain-Weymss Malts Untold Riches 49.1%
An initial aroma of cracked leather, dusty books and antique wood reveals the decades of cask maturation. Dark fruits, maraschino cherries and orange oil all develop like a gourmet Black Forest Gateau.
Full bodied and smooth with demerara coated walnuts and pecans mingling with plums, dates, banana bread and stick toffee pudding sauce. Hints of salinity and mineralic notes come through as salted caramel or waxy honey.
Mild spice hints of saffron, clove and nutmeg. Gentle wood smoke and salted caramel lingers for many seconds.
Notes for Bunnahabhain
Bunnahabhain means ‘mouth of the river in Gaelic’. It’s origin can be traced back to 1879 when the idea of an Islay Distillery Company was created and the distillery built in 1883 beside the beautiful Bunnahabhain Bay on the Isle of Islay. If you stand for a moment your senses will smell the scent of the salt on the wind.
The distillery relied on sea trade and boats were sent from the village pier full of casks of whisky to the mainland.
Sadly in 1930 the distillery closed due to an economic downturn after the Great War but opened again 7 years later. Over the years Islay hasn’t changed much – the scenery is stunning. New roads have been built making it easier to travel around the Island. Over the years demand soared, new stills installed in 1963 and production increased. Investment also increased, packaging was modernised and a visitor centre added.
Staff make you feel welcome, the whisky tours are popular creating a great atmosphere.

The Wemyss family began building a new distillery 2013 and opened in 2014 on the site of the historic and charming East Newhall Farm steading approximately 6 miles from St. Andrews and within sight of the world-famous Kingsbarns championship golf course.
Founded in 2005 is Wemyss Malts independently run by brother and sister duo William and Isabella, of the Scottish Wemyss family. William Wemyss was inspired to create distinctive and bold Scottish whiskie having spent time in Southern France with the expert wine blenders. Isabella Wemyss, has an eye, and nose, for uncompromising quality.
With a team of expertise including blenders and veteran specialists in the whisky industry, also have the expertise of whisky writer Charlie Maclean. They source mature single malt whisky from whisky warehouses of Scotland. With the unique skills of their trusted blenders take these precious ingredients and craft them into new and flavourful creations and distinct flavours that represent the key profiles that can be found in Scotch whisky production.
The Wemyss family has direct links to Scotland’s whisky history when Haig built the first distillery on their land in the Kingdom of Fife in 1840. Wemyss land in the Kingdom of Fife has been used for many decades to grow quality barley and continues to supply the very best for Scotch malt whisky production, including their very own sister brand Kingsbarns Single Malt.
