Information from Morrison Mackay

Imperial Distillery

The Imperial distillery was established in 1897, and designed by the architect Charles Doig,  It was built near the River Spey in Carron, Scotland and the town of Aberlour, the founder was Thomas MacKenzie,

It closed in 1898, after less than a year in production, despite being one of the largest in the region. It was bought in 1916 by the Distillers Company Limited but didn’t produce whisky until 1919 then closed in 1925.

In the 1950’s there was a demand for whisky and the Imperial distillery went through changes over the years increasing the number of stills as well as other changes from 1964 to 1985. There was a downturn in demand and overproducing and closed again.

Allied Distillers took over the distillery in 1991 only to close in 2000. In 2005 Chivas Brothers bought the disused Imperial distillery and replaced it with the new Dalmunach distillery which opened in 2015 and close to the River Spey in Carron, Scotland

Today it is supported by Independent bottlers.
