Tasting Notes-Gordon & MacPhail-Glenlivet 1978 Vintage 54.3%

Stewed raisin aromas combine with orange peel and faint notes of beeswax polish. Baked spiced apples give way to vanilla pod and soft nutmeg.

Cinnamon spice flavours are followed by marmalade and toasted almonds. Roasted coffee beans come to the force, leading to Morello cherry and hazelnuts.

A long finish with sultanas and a sweet sherry influence.

Notes from the box.

Gordon and MacPhail

Is a family business over 120 years.  Since 1895 they have been committed to the art of maturing scotch whisky. Over the years they have created a unique ‘private collection’ of single malt whisky. Their stocks include rare expressions and exceptional one-offs which makes them popular.

Lying at the heart of their unrivaled portfolio, this range demonstrates the pursuit of perfection in matching cask with spirit.

These single cask and small batch expressions offer an ever-changing collection of unique perspectives on distilleries’ own bottling’s.

For the malt whisky explorer this delivers a journey of discovery through different flavours, finishes, strengths and vintages.

Glenlivet Distillery

The distillery was founded by George Smith who came from a long line of illicit distillers. He inherited leased land at Upper Drumin Farm in 1817 where he continued the family tradition to supplement his crofter’s wage.

Smith was the first to incorporate his distilling operation after the Excise Act of 1823 was pushed through Parliament, championed by the Duke of Gordon – Smith’s landlord.

The duke not only persuaded Smith to take out the first license in the parish of Glenlivet but he also contributed to the distillery build at Drumin.

Thanks to their vision and that of George’s son, John Gordon Smith – the distillery would produce a spirit that defined Speyside whisky.

Because of the quality, success, and respect attained, several distilleries in the region appended the name Glenlivet to their own.

This led to a landmark decision in 1884 that stipulated in law that only Smith’s single malt could call itself ‘The Glenlivet’ (photo courtesy of John Paul Photography).
