This is why all their whisky is matured in the finest first fill sherry casks. There can be no shortcuts to creating such natural colour and taste.
Every cask is hand selected by their experienced tasting panel and bottled at cask strength, without chill filtration, to give a pure whisky experience from a bygone era.
Caol Ila Distillery
Pronounced ‘Cull-Eela’ in gaelic, the distillery was established in 1846 by Glasgow distillery owner Hector Henderson. Located 1 mile from Port Askaig, North East of the Isle of Islay in a beautiful setting with amazing views of the Sound of Islay looking over to the Paps of Jura.
By 1863 traders Bulloch Lade & Co took over the distillery and business was good selling blended whisky. The distillery changed hands 3 times over 20 Years and by 1879 had its own pier and and steamships took the whisky to the mainland.
In 1920 Bulloch Lade & Co went into liquidation and sold to JP O’Brien Ltd who then sold it to Caol Ila Distillery.Co.Ltd and re-opened it in 1934 but in 1941 because of restrictions on barley and people power the distillery had to close once again.
Eventually re-opening again, by 1972 the distillery had increased production, it also expanded and by 1974 demand for blended whisky also increased.
Today the distillery with friendly staff and tourists visiting from all over the world makes it a wonderful place to visit and being able to buy from their selection of single malt whiskies makes it an enjoyable experience.
